A gout diet is a diet which contains foods that are low in purine. Purine is a substance found naturally in food and is also naturally produced by the human body.
Purine by itself isn’t the problem. The problem is that purines break down into uric acid, that can form into crystals which deposit in the joints and cause pain and inflammation. This joint pain is referred to as gout, or a gout attack.
It is very important to keep your diet in check to avoid food that increases the uric acid content in the body.
It’s also important not to lose weight too quickly. Rapid weight loss may increase the amount of uric acid in your body.
Studies have shown that vegetables high in purines do not increase the risk of gout or recurring gout attacks. A healthy diet based on lots of vegetables, seeds, nuts, and fruits can include high-purine vegetables, such as spinach, asparagus, cauliflower, peas, or mushrooms. Another interesting aspect of the vegetable and gout research has been the repeated finding that higher intake of vitamin C can lower risk of gout.
In addition, drinking too much alcohol has been strongly associated with gout for many years. Some types of alcohol, especially beer, contain high levels of purines, that could be an indirect cause of gout.
High-purine foods list to avoid include:
Tuna, herring, codfish, and haddock.
Anchovies, scallops, sardines, and mussels.
Organ meats, such as heart, brains, liver, kidney, and sweetbreads.
Wild game meats, like goose and duck.
Yeast extracts taken in the form of a supplement.
Gravies and sauces made with meat.
